It’s easy to get caught up in wanting new things.
I walked past JB Hi-FI and in the sale window saw a barista style coffee machine. I have to have that.
My mind was in overdrive:
- I can make your own custom coffees
- I can be my own barista
- I could grind any beans I want
Look at the sale price. What a bargain.
Except it’s not.
There is always a price to pay.
Yes, it’s on sale. But it still costs something. Is it a necessary purchase for me? If the cost is 18 hours of work, is having a new coffee machine worth it? My current Nespresso machine is awesome. Why not save those 18 hours for something else? I could take 5 hours leave without pay and it would be a better deal. I’d sit on the patio and read. That sounds much better.
The initial pull from my brain to purchase was strong. It took me recognising this, taking a few breaths, and asking myself questions to determine if I actually need it. I was ready to tap my phone and buy.
I kept walking, got home, made a Nespresso, and enjoyed each sip. I’m glad I didn’t do an impulse purchase.
